Based on the real life story of William Henry Lane, a brilliant, young, black dancer of freed slave heritage, brought to London by PT Barnum in 1848 to dance, as “Master Juba”, for Queen Victoria. Elevated to stardom by Charles Dickens, Juba Throws down the gauntlet in a bid to become the ‘champion dancer of the world’. If he wins he will be freed from the Black Face mask of the minstrel and escape his freed slave heritage. Juba changed the face of dance in this country forever; by fusing Irish dance with Black dance he created a lasting legacy to the world: tap dance. |
